TSI Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is TSI?

TSI stands for Texas Success Initiative. All Texas public institutions of higher education must be in compliance with a law that requires all entering college students to be assessed for college readiness in reading, mathematics and writing, unless students qualify for an exemption. Based on these results, you will be placed in the appropriate courses.

  • How can a student be exempt?

Students may be exempt based on their scores on the ACT, SAT or TAKS/STAAR tests.

  • Who must take a TSI assessment?

Unless exempt, students entering a Texas college or university must take a TSI assessment and receive a passing score to enroll in college-level courses. Any new student who has not completed college coursework prior to Aug. 26, 2013, or met a state-approved exemption will be subject to the new TSI Assessment requirements.

  • How will I know if I am exempt?

Current ASU students and newly admitted students can follow these steps:

    • Log on to RamPort.
    • Select the Rams icon located at the top of the page
    • Choose the link labeled View TX Success Initiative, Drop Limit and Core Curriculum

If you need help accessing RamPort, call Information Technology at 325-942-2911.

  • How do I make arrangements to take a test?

Contact the ASU Testing Center or your nearest college or community college to see if it offers the TSI Assessment. If you take the exam at the ASU Testing Center, you will register for the TSI Assessment.

  • What do I do after I have taken TSI assessments and have scores to submit?

Simply fax your scores to 325-942-2553 or email them to

Authorize ASU to access your TSIA scores: TSIA Release Form.

  • What happens if my scores are not on file?

Students who do not have test scores on file will not be allowed to register for classes, unless they are exempt. Prospective students should provide proof of an exemption or schedule to take an approved TSI test as soon as possible so that scores will be available in time for orientation and registration.
