Dr. Ralph Chase

The West Texas Collection is named for Dr. Ralph R. Chase, the late pediatrician from San Angelo. Chase graduated from San Angelo High School in 1939 and graduated from San Angelo College 1941. He went on to graduate from the University of Texas and served in the United State Navy Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II.

Chase received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago in 1951. After completing his residency, Ralph and his wife, Virginia, returned to Texas.

Known to most as “Uncle Ralphie,” Chase worked for the benefit of underprivileged children throughout the Concho Valley. For his efforts, Chase was honored by his fellow pediatricians as Pediatrician of the Year in 1978. He was also chosen as San Angelo’s 1988 Citizen of the Year.

Dr. Chase was a driving force in helping ASU acquire the Roy E. Moon Distinguished Lectureship in Science. The Angelo Community Hospital Lectureship in the Humanities Series at ASU was renamed the Chase Lectureship in the Humanities in his honor
