Non-Degree Seeking Students

Due to a recent determination by the Angelo State University administration, after a review of federal (Title IV) financial aid eligibility requirements, non-degree seeking students in certification and certificate programs are not eligible to receive federal financial aid.  This includes eligibility for Federal Direct as well as Parent and Graduate PLUS Loans. Students admitted as degree seeking taking coursework towards a certification or certificate as well as a degree program are still eligible.  The change takes effect beginning in the fall 2018 semester.

  • Loan Options

Students in non-degree certification and certificate programs are still eligible for a state funded loan through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board called the College Access Loan (must be a Texas resident) and Private Alternative Educational Loans (used the “Show Advanced Filters” option to find loans available for students not seeking a degree). Unlike the Federal Direct Loan, these loans require a favorable credit evaluation or a cosigner who has good credit standing.

  • Scholarship and Grants

Students in non-degree programs of study are typically not eligible for ASU scholarship. Any scholarships would come directly from the academic program departments.

Students that complete the FAFSA and are determined to have financial need will be reviewed for grants from the state (i.e. TPEG).  These fund require at least half-time enrollment and are limited.

If you are interested in additional information regarding these funding options or have further questions about this policy change, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
