FAFSA Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a FSA ID?

You are not required to have an FSA ID to complete and submit a FAFSA on the web application.  However, it is the fastest way to sign your application and have it processed.  It is also the only way to access your data online.  If you do not already have an FSA ID, you can create an FSA ID.

  • What will I need to fill out the FAFSA?

To complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), will need:

    • Your Social Security Number
    • Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
    • Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned. (Note: You may be able to transfer your federal tax return information into your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.)
    • Bank statements and records of investments (if applicable)
    • Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
    • An FSA ID to sign electronically.

If you are a dependent student, then you will also need most of the above information for your parent(s).

  • Do I have to apply for admission before I list Angelo State University on my FAFSA?

Nope!  Our FAFSA school code is 003541.  List us and we’ll get your FAFSA application!

  • What if my parents’ (or my) marital status has changed since we filed 2018 taxes?

Here are some tips for this type of situation:

    • The FAFSA asks for marital status “as of today” (the day it’s filled out). So if the student or parent is married now but wasn’t in 2018 (and therefore didn’t file taxes as married), the spouse’s income will need to be added to the FAFSA.
    • Similarly, if the student or parent filed 2018 taxes as married but is no longer married when filling out the FAFSA, the spouse’s income will need to be subtracted.
    • And if the student or parent was married when filing 2018 taxes, then got divorced and is now married to someone else, there’s a bit more math to do: Subtract the ex’s income, then add the new spouse’s income.
    • The help text in will discuss all these situations.
  • Will my 2019-20 FAFSA information be carried over onto the 2020-21 FAFSA?

If you choose the Renewal FAFSA option when you start your application at, some basic information from your 2019–20 FAFSA will be prepopulated in your 2020–21 FAFSA. However, your tax and income information will not. (Too much could have changed in your life since you filled out the 2019–20 FAFSA.)

  • Are deadlines now earlier?

Yes and no.  The federal deadline hasn’t changed, but remember: some aid is first-come, first served, so it is always in your best interest to complete the application as soon as possible. Beginning with 2020-2021 Award Year, our priority filing deadline has changed to January 15th.

  • Can I use 2019 income and tax information for the 2020-21 academic year?

No. 2019 income and tax information will be used when you apply for the 2021-22 academic year; however, if you have special circumstances such as loss or income or high medical expenses you can submit forms to our office.
