Nurses, Nursing Students Honored by Mayor's "Nurses Week" Proclamation

During Monday's city council meeting, San Angelo Mayor Johnny Fender proclaimed the week of May 6-12 as "Nurses Week in San Angelo."

Next week also coincides with both National and Texas Nurses Weeks. Additionally, May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern professional nursing.

Dr. Donald Coers, Angelo State University vice president for academic affairs, and Dr. Edward Russell, ASU Nursing Department head and Texas Nurses Association district 16 president, accepted the honor on behalf of area nurses and ASU nursing students.

"It is an honor to accept the mayor's proclamation on behalf of San Angelo nurses and nursing students," Russell said. "Everyone has been touched by a nurse at some time in their lives, and this Nurses Week recognition encourages us to show our appreciation and celebrate nursing's accomplishments and efforts to improve the health of our citizens."

Also present to accept the proclamation were Lawrence Leonard, CEO of Shannon Hospital; Dr. Dan Stultz, CEO of Shannon Health System; Sam Frizzel, CEO of San Angelo Community Hospital; Cecil Jameson, chief nursing officer of San Angelo Community Hospital; Sherry Crowder, chief nursing officer of RiverCrest Hospital; and Donna Rutledge, director of Howard College's LVN program.

The Mayor's proclamation is on display in the ASU Nursing Department.
