Rep. Gallego to Speak at Hispanic Luncheon at ASU
State Representative Pete P. Gallego, D-Alpine, will address the Association of Hispanic Leaders membership luncheon Tuesday, Dec. 11, on the campus of Angelo State University.
The luncheon, which is open to the public, will begin at 11:45 a.m. in the Davidson Conference Center in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Cost is $11. Reservations are required and should be made before 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, by calling the association at 325-658-9771.
Gallego represents District 74, which includes Brewster, Culberson, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Kinney, Maverick, Pecos, Presidio, Terrell and Val Verde counties. He is the first Hispanic to represent this 34,000-square-mile district encompassing approximately two-thirds of the Texas/Mexico border region.
He has been a member of the Texas House of Representatives since 1991. During his initial legislative session, he became the first freshman and first ethnic minority member ever elected to chair the House Democratic Caucus.
Currently, he chairs the General Investigating Committee and is a member of the Appropriations and Elections committees. In the Legislature, Gallego is known as an expert in law enforcement, criminal justice, campaign finance reform and victims' rights. He has been honored by the Texas State University System, the University of Texas System and the Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas for his support of higher education.
Texas Monthly named him one of the "Ten Best" legislators following the 76th Legislative session.
An Alpine native, Gallego graduated from Sul Ross State University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in political science. In 1985 he earned a doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Texas School of Law. He now heads the southwest Texas law office of Davis & Wilkerson, P.C. His law practice is concentrated in the areas of medical malpractice and insurance defense.
