30th Anniversary Celebration Set for AFROTC at ASU
Angelo State University's Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps unit will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its creation with four days of activities Oct. 18-21 during ASU's annual Homecoming celebration.
Detachment 847 was established at ASU in 1971 and today has more than 170 members in the Cadet Corps. Since its establishment, the detachment has commissioned more than 500 second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force.
Maj. Darcy L. Maloney, who is coordinating the anniversary celebration, said the detachment hopes to attract a substantial number of those graduates back to campus for the festivities. Persons desiring information on the reunion schedule or with knowledge on the location of former ASU cadets are encouraged to contact Maloney by phone at 325-942-2036 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Scheduled activities during the reunion and anniversary celebration will begin Thursday, Oct. 18, with a 6 p.m. family mixer at Mejor Que Nada. On Friday, Oct. 19, ROTC alumni will have a chance to meet with current cadets in the morning and then participate in a 1 p.m. Road Rally where they will drive around San Angelo and see how once familiar sites have changed. A Road Rally Family Picnic is scheduled at 3 p.m. at the ASU Lakehouse.
Participants will attend the ASU Alumni Association dinner at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Houston Harte University Center where the first annual ASU Distinguished ROTC Alumnus will be honored.
On Saturday, Oct. 20, an ROTC alumni presentation ceremony with brunch is scheduled for 11 a.m. in the University Center. ROTC alumni will also be able to sit together during the 2 p.m. Homecoming Parade and the 7 p.m. game when ASU takes on Northeastern State University.
Activities will conclude 9-11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, with a come-and-go breakfast at the Golden Corral.
Since its establishment, the 847th Cadet Wing has continued to rank in the top three of the 33 detachments in Texas and has received numerous national awards for its performance and service to the Air Force, including the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award and the "High Flight" Award for top units in the nation.
