Fish Splash 2001 Set to Kick Off Academic Year at ASU

Angelo State University will welcome a new class of students to campus Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25-26, with Fish Splash 2001, a long-standing campus tradition designed to help first-year ASU students get acquainted with the university and college life in general.

Fish Splash will precede the beginning of fall classes which start Monday, Aug. 27.

ASU Assistant Dean of Student Life Laura Oosterveen said, "Fish Splash is a two-day event of organized fun and instructive orientation designed specifically to welcome new ASU students to campus, in addition to acclimating them to life at Angelo State University."

Activities will begin that Saturday with registration at noon at the ASU Pavilion. At 1 p.m. in the C.J. Davison Conference Center students will participate in Playfair, a nationally recognized program that provides fun interactive activities for participants. At 2:15 p.m. students will be involved in a variety of small group mixers at various campus locations and then at 4 p.m. will participate in a program on "Making College Count" in Room 100 of the Math-Computer Science Building.

After dinner with faculty members, Fish Splash participants will gather at 7 p.m. outside the Food Service Center for a welcome from ASU President James Hindman as well as introductions of the cheerleaders, band, Angelettes, Student Senate officers and team coaches and captains.

A hypnotist will then entertain students at 8 p.m. at the Super Slab. From 9-11 p.m. games are scheduled at the Super Slab.

Sunday's activities will focus on "Success Sessions" which are designed to give a quick overview of topics or skills critical to a student's success at ASU. Sessions are scheduled 1-5 p.m. with topics including ASU spirit, transition issues, alcohol/drug issues and campus safety. Fish Splash will conclude with a Student Organization Fair from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Pavilion.
