ASU Trio Honored by Faculty Senate for Teaching Excellence

Three faculty members at Angelo State University have been honored for teaching excellence by the ASU Faculty Senate.

Mathematics Instructor Ellen D. Moreland, who joined the ASU faculty in 1988, was named the recipient of the 2000-01 Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Sherry J. Halfmann, professional specialist in nursing, and Dr. Mark Hama, visiting assistant professor of English, were finalists for the award.

All three educators will be recognized at ASU's commencement May 11 and will receive plaques and cash awards of $1,200 for the recipient and $700 for the finalists. A permanent plaque honoring the recipients will be displayed in the University Center.

Moreland was recognized for the variety of her mathematics teaching responsibilities, ranging from developmental courses for under-prepared students to a senior level "capstone" course for future high school math teachers.

She is credited with almost single-handedly improving the pass rate on the Mathematics ExCET exam from less than 65 percent in 1997 to 100 percent in each subsequent year. She author a series of mathematics course components that played a pivotal role in ASU acquiring a $5 million National Science Foundation Grant for a 10-university consortium, including ASU.

Moreland also was recognized by her fellow faculty for her hard work, dedication, collegial spirit, high academic standards and unwavering commitment to the success of her students.

Halfmann joined the ASU nursing faculty in 1989 and became director of the department's associate in applied science nursing (AASN) program. In the two years she has directed the AASN program, the pass rate on the national registered nurse exam has increased from 71 percent to more than 91 percent. She has been a leader in integrating educational technology in the classroom and is identified by her peers as a master teacher.

Hama was honored for his inspirational teaching. His fellow English teachers acknowledged his love of learning and his skill at getting students to appreciate the interplay play of ideas. His students learn how to learn, rather than just learning the content of a given course. His humor and classroom enthusiasm enhance the learning experience in both his freshman composition classes and his sophomore literature classes.
