Diaz Dennis to Speak as ASU's 2001 Wells Fargo Lecturer

This year's Wells Fargo Distinguished Lecture in Business will be delivered at Angelo State University Thursday, April 5, by Patricia Diaz Dennis, the senior vice president for regulatory and public affairs at SBC Communications Inc. in San Antonio.

Diaz Dennis has risen to the top of the highly competitive communications industry and has demonstrated the effectiveness of women in business. As SBC Communications' senior vice president for regulatory and public affairs, Diaz Dennis is responsible for the national constituency and regulatory, legislative, governmental, external affairs as well as well as industry relations activities for SBC Telecom.

She will speak at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 5, in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center of the Houston Harte University Center on the ASU campus. The lecture is open to the public free. A San Angelo Chamber of Commerce reception will follow the lecture in the Nasworthy Suite on the second floor of the University Center.

Diaz Dennis was appointed as a member of the Board of Regents of the Texas State University, the governing board of Angelo State University, in 1999 by then Texas Gov. George W. Bush.

She has held three presidential appointments as federal communications commissioner, as member of the National Labor Relations Board and as assistant secretary of state for human rights and humanitarian affairs.

She is a member of the California, Texas and District of Columbia bars and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Diaz Dennis serves on the boards of directors of MassMutual/The Blue Chip Co., Girl Scouts of the USA and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Born in Santa Rita, N.M., she holds a law degree from Loyola University of Los Angeles and an undergraduate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

The Wells Fargo Distinguished Lectureship in Business was established in 1995 to strengthen the relationship between the San Angelo business community and Angelo State University and to provide ASU students with exposure to well-known business leaders who can offer practical ideas and solutions to the management problems of today. Wells Fargo of San Angelo has committed to provide annual funding to the University for underwriting the lectureship.
