ASU Earns Military Friendly Designation Again

For the third consecutive year, Angelo State University has received the designation as a “Military Friendly School” from G.I. Jobs magazine, which serves military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. Overall, Angelo State was among 1,518 educational institutions out of 8,000 nationally to be recognized as military friendly.

“We are pleased to again be recognized as a military friendly school because providing quality service to military personnel and veterans is a major way we at Angelo State can thank them for their service to our country,” said ASU President Joseph C. Rallo, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel. “Additionally, the recognition benefits our new Center for Security Studies as it begins offering classes to military personnel online this year and in the classroom next fall.”

The 1,518 institutions on the 2012 list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience, according to the G.I. Jobs announcement, which indicated the recognized schools are making the grade by offering scholarships and discounts, veterans’ clubs, full-time staff, military credit and other services to those with military experience. The 2012 list was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide.

This year for the first time, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans to help other military personnel find the right school. The resulting feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution based on peer reviews from current students.

Michael Dakduk, executive director for Student Veterans of America, said, “The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience. Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans.”

A detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be published in G.I. Jobs’ annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools this October. G.I. Jobs ( is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business with various related publications, including Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines. The group annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”
