ASU Communication Prof Wins Statewide Award

Dr. George Pacheco Jr., an assistant professor of communication at Angelo State University, has been named the University Educator of the Year by the Texas Speech Communication Association (TSCA).

Pacheco was honored along with nominees from the TSCA’s 20 districts throughout Texas at the organization’s 2011 convention Oct. 15 in Irving.

Each year, the TSCA distributes awards to top educators at the middle school/junior high, high school, community college and university levels. Criteria for nominees include a high level of excellence in teaching as evidenced by students and supervisors, active TSCA membership for at least five years and significant service to TSCA.

Pacheco’s nomination was supported by Drs. Shawn Wahl, Jake Simmons and Christopher Collins from the ASU Communication, Mass Media and Theatre Department; Dr. Doyle Carter, director of the ASU Quality Enhancement Plan; and several of Pacheco’s students.

An ASU faculty member since 2007, Pacheco teaches classes in intercultural, small group and nonverbal communication, as well as public speaking and rhetoric of humor. His research interests include first-generation college students, critical-cultural communication, Hispanic/Latino communication and rhetorical/qualitative methodologies. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Texas A&M University and a doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.

The TSCA is the largest state professional communication association in the U.S. Membership is open to all communication educators, students and consultants, as well as individuals interested in the field of speech communication. The association provides updated professional awareness and networking opportunities, as well as exposure to innovations, teaching methodologies and scholarly works relevant to the discipline of speech communication.
