ASU Judging Teams Off to Great Start

Angelo State University’s Wool Judging Team finished just one point out of first place at the National Western Contest earlier this month in Denver, while the newly revived Livestock Judging Team has also fared well in its first competitions in a decade.

At the National Western, ASU’s Wool Judging Team scored 1,871 points, a single point behind winner Texas Tech University, tied with Colorado State University, and ahead of South Dakota State University, Texas A&M University and several other Division I schools. Individually, ASU team members Nicole Rumsey and Sondra Lohse finished fourth and seventh, respectively.

Other ASU team members include William Meyer, Julianne Royce, Darren Seidel, Clayton Fisher, Ryan Easterly, Corey Bruson, Kameron Haecker and Casey Kruse. Graduate student coaches are Michael Boenig, Sharla Schmidt and Katie Ede.

Meanwhile, ASU’s Livestock Judging Team has already competed in two events, finishing fourth at the Arizona National Contest in Phoenix, and 14th out of 30 teams at the National Western Contest in Denver. In Phoenix, ASU’s Meagan Stephens and Derrick Drury finished first and second, respectively, in the individual standings.

Other ASU team members include Logan Newsom, Scott Halfmann, Beth Forehand and Blaine Walker. Coaches are graduate student Nathan Ray and instructor Kris Ede.

ASU’s Meat Judging Team of Devin Absher, Kara Andrews, Clinton Bippert, Michael Schwartz and Travis Shannon finished eighth at the National Western.
