ASU Groups to Join Sexual Assault Awareness Month Activities

Several Angelo State University groups and student organizations will participate in San Angelo’s citywide Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities underway throughout April.

On Thursday, April 7, ASU will host Special Agent Elizabeth Rocha from Goodfellow Air Force Base for a program on the criminal investigation of sexual assault cases from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Rooms 203-204 of the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Information booths on sexual assault awareness will also be on display daily during the noon hour through Friday, April 8, in the University Center.

ASU drama students will stage a talk show, “How Close is Too Close,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in the Centennial Village residence hall, 2675 W. Ave. N, and again on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Texan Hall residence hall, 2104 S. Van Buren St. Students will play the roles of the victim, the victim’s friends, the perpetrator, the perpetrator’s friend, the talk show host and a counselor.

On Friday, April 15, ASU volunteers will participate in the “Watch Your Drink Night” rape awareness program at night clubs and bars throughout San Angelo to provide information on date-rape drugs and to caution bar patrons to keep an eye on their drinks. Then, on Saturday, April 16, ASU’s Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity members will participate in the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” high-heel walk beginning at 10 a.m. at the Tom Green County Courthouse to help increase sexual assault awareness.

On Thursday, April 28, Denim Day activities will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center, including an information table to educate students on the reason for Denim Day, provide supplies for students to create their own denim pin or bracelet to wear throughout the day to heighten sexual assault awareness. Denim Day stems from an Italian Supreme Court’s decision that overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans. Women in the Italian Parliament protested the decision by wearing jeans on the steps of the Supreme Court. That led to worldwide Denim Day demonstrations that are renewed each year.

In addition, an ASU student art exhibit, “Healing Happens When Understanding Happens,” to heighten awareness of rape trauma and assault is on display throughout April on the second floor of ASU’s Porter Henderson Library, 2025 S. Johnson St.

ASU sponsors for the activities include Counseling Services, Residential Programs, Drama Department, Kappa Pi Art Fraternity, Art and Music Department, Library, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and from the city, Goodfellow Air Force Base and the Concho Valley Rape Crisis Center.
