ASU to Host Ceramic Symposium, Workshop

Angelo State University will host the 26th annual San Angelo Ceramic Symposium and a ceramic workshop on Friday, April 15, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

The Ceramic Symposium will run from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and is open free to the public. It will be followed by a public reception with the symposium speakers at 4:30 p.m. in Gallery 193 in the Carr Building.

Panelists for the symposium will include Harris Deller, Marian Haigh, and Ed and Cornelia Gates. Deller is a professor of art at the School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Haigh, who lives in Austin, works in ceramics and teaches workshops. Her works can be seen in American and European museums, and corporate and private collections. Ed and Cornelia Henderson Gates own and operate Aloe Tile Works in Corpus Christi. Cornelia Gates has been published in Ceramics Monthly and The Journal of the American Pottery Association.

Howard Taylor, director of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA), will serve as moderator of the symposium, and Esteban Apodaca, ASU associate professor of art in ceramics, will be symposium coordinator.

Also on Friday, April 15, ceramicist Stan Irvin, a St. Edward’s University art professor, will demonstrate his altered wheel-thrown vessel forms and discuss the ideas that drive his process and aesthetic during a 9 a.m. workshop at the ASU ceramics facility at SAMFA. The workshop is also open free to the public.

The Ceramic Symposium is co-sponsored by ASU, SAMFA, the San Angelo Museum Endowment for Ceramic Events and the Old Chicken Farm Art Center. It is part of the five-day Ceramic Invitational Exhibition and Symposium, which runs April 14-18 at various locations.
