ASU President and SAISD Principal to Swap Jobs for a Day

What started as lighthearted banter between friends turned into a job swap for Angelo State University President Dr. Joseph C. Rallo and Elaine Stribling, principal of Lee Middle School, on Monday, March 8, when they trade places on the educational hierarchy for a day.

Rallo and Stribling chatted in December during a reception benefiting the Early Childhood Intervention Program at Education Service Center Region XV. As leaders of educational institutions, the two compared notes and challenged one another to try the other’s career for one day. Stribling accepted and pursued the challenge, thus setting the plan in motion.

While the proposed exchange began tongue-in-cheek, both educators and their respective schools will derive a significant benefit.

“I would like to get a glimpse of how a college operates on a day-to-day basis compared to a secondary school,” Stribling said. “The State has asked us as secondary administrators to do all we can to create a ‘culture of college’ with our students. I want to be better prepared to communicate to my middle school students all the opportunities ASU offers and that they need to be thinking about it now.”

Rallo said, “I will get a preview of college freshmen entering ASU four to six years from now and experience just a hint of their daily routine as young teens. It is important that we at the university level do everything possible to help younger students achieve not just college readiness, but college ‘eagerness.’”

As for the exchange day itself, Stribling mentioned that she teaches a sixth-grade math class during first period.

“I don’t think Dr. Rallo knows yet that he’s scheduled to teach math that day,” she said.

For him, the day starts with math continues with lunch duty and concludes with outside duty.

For Stribling, the day will be filled with continuous meetings with various operational offices and departments on campus. Her day will conclude with handling administrative duties, such as approving online request forms, in the president’s office.
