Marital Mayhem Drives Arts at ASU’s ‘Bedroom Farce’

A couple whose tempestuous marriage is headed for a breakup ropes three other couples into their fray in “Bedroom Farce,” Angelo State University's first Arts at ASU summer dinner theatre production, which runs June 24-27 and July 1-3 in the ASU Modular Theatre.

Tickets are $12.50 for ASU students and ASU activity card holders, $15 for non-ASU students and Arts at ASU subscribers, and $20 general admission. The Modular Theatre is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Doors will open at 6:45 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and the performances will begin at 8 p.m. on June 24-26 and July 1-3. A matinee is scheduled for Sunday, June 27, with doors opening at 12:45 p.m., dinner served at 1 p.m. and the show starting at 2 p.m.

The play swirls around four couples who are connected through friendship or relationships.

“All four of these couples are related in some way,” said ASU Theatre Director Bill Doll. “There are parents, friends, children and exes among the couples, which creates some jealousy and frustration. The couple who is struggling come in and stir up everyone else’s lives.”

“There is a lot of innuendo and it’s a lot of fun,” he added. “People will see things in relationships and about relationships to laugh at. It’s another lark for summer fare.”

The play takes place sequentially in the other three beleaguered couples’ bedrooms during an endless Saturday night of co-dependence and dysfunction. Domestic order is thrown into upheaval, leading the players to a touching epiphany.

The long-running hit in London and New York was written by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn. It opened in 1975 in England and on Broadway in 1979.

“Ayckbourn creates these interesting farces,” Doll said. “It is British humor, but not totally bawdy. It is fun and does interweave all these people in their different locations.”

The production features Lance Turner as Earnest, Chrysti Friar as Delia, Matthew Posey as Nick, Jaime Westfall as Jan, Ty Matlock as Malcolm, Kenedi Doerfer as Kate, Alexander Addison as Trevor and Laurie Proveaux as Susannah.

Eldra Sanford is the University Theatre costumer, Matt Smith is the technical director, and for this production, Katherine Heaney is the stage manager, Martin Rodriguez is assistant stage manager, Sarah Stewart is the master electrician, Amber Horton is wardrobe manager and Friar is the box office manager.
