ASU Accounting Student Wins National Scholarship

Rose Garza, an Angelo State University accounting student from Ozona, has been selected by the American Institute of Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) as one of only 91 recipients nationally of an AICPA Minority Scholarship.

Garza and the other 90 honorees will each receive between $1,500-$3,000 for the 2010-11 academic year that can be used for college expenses, including tuition, fees, housing, meal plans and books. Garza is also one of only 15 Texas students to receive a scholarship. Other recipients represent more than 60 colleges and universities in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Garza is scheduled to graduate in May from ASU’s Integrated Bachelor of Business Administration/Master of Professional Accountancy (B.B.A./M.P.A.) program with both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She is currently an accounting intern at Armstrong, Backus and Co. of San Angelo.

The AICPA Minority Scholarship program provides awards to outstanding minority students to encourage their selection of accounting as a major and their ultimate entry into the profession. Funding is provided by the AICPA Foundation, with contributions from the New Jersey Society of CPAs and Robert Half International. Over the last four decades, the program has provided over $14 million in scholarships to approximately 8,000 accounting scholars.
