ASU’s Pearl of the Concho Writing Project Completes Summer Institute

West Texas K-12 teachers and graduate students are returning to their classrooms for the fall semester and 14 of them are equipped with new knowledge they gained at the Pearl of the Concho Writing Project’s Summer Institute on the Angelo State University campus.

“After completing the Summer Institute,” said Dr. Marilyn Eisenwine, ASU associate professor of teacher education and project director, “participants receive six graduate hours of course credit and are known as ‘Teacher Consultants’ (TCs). These TCs conduct training for other educators at the Education Service Center Region XV during the summer months on writing in the curriculum.”

Counting the summer presentations of the ASU project’s seven-year history, thousands of area educators and students have been impacted by the National Writing Project, which includes the Pearl of the Concho program.

“Hopefully,” Eisenwine said, “these teachers take back to their classrooms the love of writing and how to incorporate it in a meaningful way.”

The National Writing Project, in a news release, stated that teacher-leaders from all grade levels and disciplines attended professional development sessions at more than 200 university-based Writing Project sites across the country. The program has been ongoing for the past 36 years.
