ASU Chorale, Orchestra Get ‘Grand and Glorious’ at the Cactus

Angelo State University’s Concert and Community Chorales will come together for “Grand and Glorious,” a selection of famous opera choruses and “Lux Aeterna” by contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen, at 7:30 p.m. April 27 in the Cactus Hotel, 36 E. Twohig Ave.

The concert, which is open free to the public, will feature the 90-voice chorus and chamber orchestra performing favorites from the world of opera, including the rousing “March of the Toreadors” from Bizet’s “Carmen,” the dramatic coronation scene from Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov,” “Va, pensiero” from Verdi’s “Nabucco” and “Song to the Moon” from Dvorak’s “Rusalka.” Highlights from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s charismatic rock opera “Evita” will cap the evening.

Critically acclaimed “Lux Aeterna” (light eternal), though not a true liturgical requiem, evokes the mood of Faur’s “Requiem” with a peaceful, ethereal quality. Composed for the Los Angeles Master Chorale in 1997, “Lux Aeterna” has become a staple of modern choral repertoires. Lauridsen, a native of the Pacific Northwest, has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California since 1972.

During intermission, refreshments will be served compliments of Earl Mulley, owner and chef of the River Terrace Restaurant, and Robert and Lisa Gandy, owners of Mr. T’s.
