ASU Course to Offer Insight into American Popular Music

Angelo State University students wishing to delve into the American music culture can sign up for “American Popular Music” (Music 1376) during the May mini-semester running May 14-28.

The class features an intensive study of pop music and will run from 8:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. weekdays for the 11-day “May-mester.” Students can fulfill their three-semester credit hour requirement in the visual and performing arts.

Along with the easy-to-understand textbook, all styles of pop music and their influences will be played, and discussions of the creators and artists behind the songs are planned as well as viewing important video footage chronicling the history and development of this unique art form.

Dr. John Irish, a Department of Art and Music professor and a veteran professional performer in numerous jazz combos, big bands and other popular musical styles, will teach the course.

Students will get behind-the-scenes glimpses of the popular music genre, experience a wide variety of music and an in-depth look at musicians, bands and pop artists.

For more information, call Irish at 942-2085, ext. 234, or go online to and click on the American Popular Music tab.
