Expert to Speak on Intercultural and Global Issues at ASU

The public is invited to attend a special presentation by communication expert Calvin Sun on Thursday, Oct. 15 at Angelo State University.

Sun will offer his presentation, “The Chinese are Coming,” at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center in the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. The event is open free to the public and is offered in conjunction with the ASU Office of Human Resources’ diversity program.

“Much of what Mr. Sun will talk about relates to interpersonal communication,” said Jesse Gomez, ASU human resources director. “Successful and clear communication presents a big enough challenge, even within our own various cultures. It’s even more critical, though, when dealing with someone from a different culture. In this talk, Mr. Sun will discuss key aspects of Chinese culture – including recent history, language and social norms – giving useful principles and tips that are relevant to staff, faculty, students and the public alike.”

A frequent consultant to businesses and organizations on intercultural and global communication, customer service and leadership, Sun spent the fall of 2008 studying and teaching at the Tsinghua School of Law in Beijing, China. His work has been featured in Computerworld, the Washington Post, New York Times and Philadelphia Business Journal. He has also written for several publications, including Computerworld, Entrepreneur and Law Technology News, and currently writes for the CNET Web site Tech Republic. His topics include communication, professional development, organizational issues and law.

Sun’s clients include Texas A&M-International University, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the University of Texas-Pan American and South Texas College. Samples of his writing can be found online at and

The presentation is being co-sponsored by the ASU Office of Human Resources, Multicultural Center and Office of Strategy, Planning and Policy. For more information, call the Office of Human Resources at 942-2168.
