ASU Marks International Day for Tolerance

Angelo State University will recognize International Day for Tolerance on Monday, Nov. 16, with special presentations by guest speaker Dr. Aaron Tyler, chair of the Graduate International Relations Department at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

Tyler will give his presentation, “Tolerance Revisited: Finding Community through Diversity,” during a Brown Bag Lunch at noon on Nov. 16 and then again at 6 p.m. that evening. Both events will be in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center in the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive, and are open free to the public.

Tyler holds a Ph.D. in religion, politics and society from Baylor University and a master’s degree in international relations from St. Mary’s. Prior to his time at St. Mary’s, he lectured in political science at Baylor and also taught in Baylor’s Truett Seminary. He has published numerous articles, reviewed several books and spoken at numerous conferences on a variety of subjects, including religious tolerance, human rights, social justice and the war on terror.

The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observation declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers of intolerance.

Tyler’s presentations are being sponsored by the ASU Multicultural Center. They are also part of a series of campus activities to recognize International Education Week Nov. 16-20.
