ASU Course Focuses on West African Women

Angelo State University’s Division of Extended Studies will offer “Women of West Africa: Achieving Personhood,” Monday, June 22, and Monday, June 29, in the Mathematics-Computer Science Building Room 112, 2200 Dena Drive.

The four-hour course will be conducted from 6:30-8:30 p.m. both evenings by LaNette Thompson and will investigate the societal expectations of African women today, including female circumcision, marriage, marketing and motherhood. Many Bambara women of Mali face these and other challenges in being excluded as “persons.”

Thompson and her husband, Marvin, are missionaries on furlough living in San Angelo. LaNette Thompson’s current assignment is as women’s ministry strategist to reach the women of Mamako, Mali.

Fee for the course is $25.
