ASU Recreation Department Adds Outdoor Program

Angelo State University’s Recreation and Intramurals Department (UREC) is increasing its scope with a new outdoor program that will eventually move to the ASU Lake House, 1925 Beaty Road, on the shore of Lake Nasworthy.

Bradley Petty, UREC director, said students will have access one- and two-person kayaks, backpacks and mountain bicycles in addition to the sports equipment already on hand, such as basketballs and table tennis sets, at the Center for Human Performance (CHP), 2050 S. Johnson St.

Some of the new outdoor equipment has arrived, except for the bikes. ASU faculty and staff, along with community experts, will offer classes in outdoor adventure skills, like basic kayaking, backpacking and camping. UREC will also organize skiing, hiking and Spring Break trips to high adventure areas. Petty said the programs will be year-round, with primary focus on the fall and spring semesters.

“We hope to expand the participation in recreational activities for a more diverse community of users,” Petty said. “Adding the outdoors program will widen the wellness component and we hope it will reach a whole other group of students who aren’t involved in our current activities.”

UREC’s ultimate goal is for all students, staff and faculty to become involved in at least one UREC program. The outdoor adventure program will be located in an already-completed facility adjacent to the ASU Lake House.

A building project to expand the CHP will begin in October with completion scheduled for October 2010 and will include a rock-climbing tower, weight room and an indoor jogging track. The outdoor adventure program will be moved to the CHP following the renovation. UREC will hire an assistant director, a graduate assistant, student trip leaders and rock wall supervisors to implement the program. A storehouse will offer a variety of outdoor equipment including tents, sleeping bags, camping equipment and a repair shop for UREC’s bicycles and for students’ personal bikes, Petty said.

Some backpacking and camping equipment is now available for check-out and can be taken anywhere within a set time limit. Equipment can be checked out daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Petty recommends calling ahead to 942-2034 to ensure it is available.
