ASU Woodwind Festival to Hone Musical Skills

Local and area high school music students will have the opportunity to learn from several music masters during the third annual Woodwind Festival Feb. 20-21, at Angelo State University in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.

Guest clinicians will include Dr. Scott Wright, clarinet professor at the University of Kentucky, and Shelly Meggison, professor of oboe at the University of Alabama. They will be joined by ASU music faculty Dr. Jeff Womack, Dr. Constance Kelley and Dr. Tim Bonenfant.

The festival is dedicated to the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone, and will begin Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. with a guest artist recital by Meggison and Wright in the Eldon U. Black Recital Hall inside the Carr EFA Building.

Festival registration for participating high school students will begin at 9 a.m. on Feb. 21, with the program beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A recital will be presented at 9:45 a.m. with guest artists Wright and Meggison performing. Womack, Kelley and Bonenfant will also perform, both as soloists and as their group, the Mesquite Trio. Dr. Eleanor Elkins will accompany all performers on piano. In addition, an ASU music student showcase is planned for 1:30 p.m.

Master classes will be taught in each instrument on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Conducting classes will be Wright, clarinet; Meggison, oboe; Bonenfant, saxophone; Kelley, flute; and Womack, bassoon.

All participants will come together for the finale of the festival, a mass choir concert, Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
