ASU to Host TCEA Area 15 Robotics Contest

Hundreds of elementary and secondary school students will descend on Angelo State University for the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) Area 15 Robotics Contest Monday, Dec. 7, in the ASU Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Students from schools in Education Service Center (ESC) Region XV will compete in two divisions. Division I will be students in grades 9-12 and Division II will be students in grades 4-8. Contests will begin at 9:15 a.m. and are open free for public viewing.

Competing in teams from their respective schools, the students will design, plan, construct, create, assemble, invent, write, present and compete to see who has developed the smartest robot. The contests vary based on strategies that involve speed, accuracy and sensing objects and light.

The theme for this year’s LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Competition Challenge is “Some Assembly Required” and is designed around the concept of factory assembly and automation. Student teams will “work” for a mock company known as TCEA Widgets Inc., based in Central Texas, which designs computer-based Widgets used to teach computer literacy across the state. The company is setting up a manufacturing line for a new “Widget 3000,” and the teams must each design a robot that assists in one stage of the production of this device.

There will also be open-ended Invention Contests where student teams will use marketing, programming, writing, constructing and presentation skills to build a robot that solves a problem of their choice.

The contests will be conducted in the University Center’s Nasworthy Suite (Room 203/204) and C.J. Davidson Conference Center. Winners will receive trophies and qualify for the TCEA State Robotics Contest May 15 in Seguin.
