ASU to Kick Off Fall Semester with Rambunctious Weekend

Before Angelo State University’s fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 24, students will spend a few days settling in and having fun during Rambunctious Weekend.

Besides offering incoming students some fun and food, Rambunctious Weekend also serves as a component of ASU’s First-Year Experience program to help students acclimate to their new environment and start out on a successful quest for a college degree.

Students, faculty and staff will gather in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena for the Fall Convocation at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Faculty and administrators in full academic regalia will welcome students in a graduation-like setting to wish them a successful academic career and give them a preview of their own graduation. ASU President Dr. Joseph C. Rallo, leading administrators and the presidents of the Faculty Senate, Staff Senate and Student Government Association will address the students about their coming experiences.

Students will begin moving into residence halls Friday, Aug. 21, at 9 a.m., after which they can enjoy a weekend of free food, games and entertainment. A lunch cookout for students and parents from 11:30-1:30 p.m. at the Pavilion will precede the Convocation.

Students and their families can sit down to a brisket cookout from 5-7 p.m. in the Pavilion with entertainment by the John Irish Jazz Quintet. Students can sign up for recreational game competitions and enjoy inflatable games from 5-9 p.m. Also available Friday evening will be balloon art and body painting, a caricaturist and a fitness class demonstration, all in the Pavilion area. Downtown merchants will hold a special art walk from 6-9 p.m. with trolley service available.

A comedy/magic act will be held at the Pavilion from 9:30-10:30 p.m. and will lead into a DJ block party and competitive games from 10:30 p.m.-midnight. A late breakfast will be served from midnight-1 a.m. in the Food Service Center, and students can play video games and watch movies from 12:30-2:30 a.m. in the Houston Harte University Center.

In addition, students can get in a workout anytime Friday and Saturday from noon-2 a.m. in the Center for Human Performance. The gym floor will be open for basketball and the swimming pool, weight room and racquetball courts will also be available.

On Saturday, students and parents can go to Downtown San Angelo for shopping and activities. Meanwhile on campus, University Recreation will conduct a mud flag football tournament in the Texan Hall area from noon-3:30 p.m. and student organizations’ representatives will acquaint students with their groups from 3-5 p.m. in the Pavilion area.

A fajita cookout and Mexican fiesta will open Saturday evening’s activities in the Pavilion area, sponsored by the student ministries and the First-Year Experience Office. Local restaurants also will offer food samples.

A spirit rally is planned at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Pavilion area by ASU cheerleaders, Angelettes, 2008 Step Contest winners and the Ram Marching Band. From 5-9 p.m., students can get caricatures, hear Mariachis from San Angelo Central High School perform and enjoy salsa dancing. Giveaways and games will also entertain the students along with juggler/comedian Mark Nizer.

Late-night activities will begin at 10:30 p.m. Saturday with the “Battle of the Sexes” game show along with sand volleyball, horseshoes, washer pitching and carnival food. From midnight-2 a.m., students can again play video games and watch movies in the University Center.

The weekend will wrap up Sunday beginning with the Air Force ROTC fall barbecue from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Goodfellow Air Force Base Recreation Camp at Lake Nasworthy. Students can find their classrooms from 2-4 p.m. starting at the Junell Center and fanning out across campus as they prepare for the first day of class on Monday.

The final activity of Rambunctious Weekend will be a Multicultural Reception at 4 p.m. in the Texan Hall Community Room.
