San Angelo Mayor to Address ASU Spring Graduates

San Angelo Mayor J.W. Lown will deliver the commencement address during Angelo State University’s spring graduation ceremonies Saturday, May 16, in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St.

Lown will address graduates of the College of Business and the College of Education during a 10 a.m. ceremony May 16. He will speak to graduates of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, College of Sciences and College of Nursing and Allied Health in a 2 p.m. ceremony. Close to 600 students will receive diplomas during the two graduation exercises.

Elected in 2003 as San Angelo’s youngest-ever mayor, Lown is now serving his third term in office. As mayor, he presides over meetings of the San Angelo City Council, which oversees every aspect of local government.

A native of San Angelo, Lown is also the president of Lown Properties, a local real estate and investment firm. He is a member of Toastmasters International and chairman of the American Trade Coalition. He is also chairman of the San Angelo Metropolitan Transportation Organization and an executive committee member of the Concho Valley Council of Governments.

Prior to entering local politics, Lown spent two years in the U.S. Peace Corps from 1999-2001. He was stationed in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, where he directed the overall mission of the Peace Corps’ Micro Enterprise Development Program to promote cross-cultural understanding and provided academic and job training to participating citizens. His duties included training other Peace Corps volunteers and their Bolivian counterparts in business class instruction, writing class materials, creating and teaching “Creativity in the Marketplace” seminars for high school students, and instructing classes on the creation and implementation of marketing plans for start-up businesses.

Lown holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Principia College in Elsah, Ill., and a real estate license from the Texas Real Estate Commission.
