ASU Communication Students to Present Papers at Conference

Angelo State University’s Department of Communication, Drama and Journalism will send four graduate students to the New Voices, New Perspectives Student Research Conference at the University of North Texas April 24-25 in Denton.

Students presenting their research papers at the conference include Gary Boyd with his work titled “Physician-Patient Encounter: Communication Components in Review” and Tiffany Paige will present “Generational Dialects in Organizational Communication: Millennials Emerging in the Boomer-Saturated Nonprofit Sector.”

Maryann Vasquez will present “Men and Communication…The Tide Is Turning: Communicating An Effective Message to Men Through Advertisement” and Wade Walker’s paper is titled “Flag-draped Military Caskets: Where Semiotics and Postmodernists Meet.”

In a letter accepting the students’ papers, the conference’s chair Dr. Elaine Wittenberg-Lyles said, “This year’s paper submissions were quite competitive and in order to be paneled, each submission must have received two affirmative recommendations from blind reviewers.”

Dr. Lana Marlow, assistant professor of communication, advises the ASU research group which has successfully submitted research to the conference five straight years. She said papers are submitted to the conference panel by students from all levels of universities, including tier one schools such as the University of Texas at Austin.

“We have a number of M.A. students who have graduated from our program and are now completing doctoral work at UT and Texas Tech University,” Marlow said. “This experience and other conference experiences have inspired a number of our students to continue with graduate school and to understand the requirements for being an academic.”
