Christmas Comedy Highlights ASU Holiday Dinner Theatre

Angelo State University invites patrons to enjoy a touching yuletide comedy and a traditional Christmas dinner as the Arts at ASU Holiday Dinner Theatre presents “Greetings!,” beginning Thursday, Nov. 30, in the ASU Modular Theatre.

Show times will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 30, Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 7-9, with dinner served each night at 7 p.m. A matinee performance is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, with dinner served at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for Arts at ASU subscribers and non-ASU students, and $12.50 for ASU students and ASU activity card holders. The holiday dinner menu will consist of turkey, ham, dressing and all the traditional trimmings.

The play centers around Andy Gorski, who has a sweet Catholic mother, a sour Catholic father and a severely mentally challenged younger brother named Mickey. When Andy brings his Jewish atheist fiancée home to meet the folks on Christmas Eve, his worst fears about his family are realized. But, Mickey, whose entire vocabulary is “oh boy” and “wow” suddenly says, “Greetings!” An ancient, wise and witty spirit who is set upon healing the family has borrowed Mickey’s body and ends up proving his healing powers. The play’s author, Tom Dudzick, has often been referred to as the “Catholic Neil Simon” for his writing style that is similar to the Jewish Simon’s.

“It’s clearly a comedy, but mixes in the importance of religion in the different aspects of everyday life,” said Dr. Bill Doll, drama professor and the play’s director. “It’s a fun show that carries a message and there are a lot of interesting twists and turns along the way.”

Tickets for “Greetings!” are currently on sale in the ASU box office. The box office is open from 2-6 p.m. weekdays and is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building. For reservations, call 942-2000.
