Northrop Grumman Awards Excellence in IT Scholarship

The first Northrop Grumman Excellence in Information Technology Scholarship has been awarded to Jacob Spencer, an Angelo State University senior computer science major from San Angelo.

As part of its ongoing commitment to Angelo State University and the San Angelo community, Northrop Grumman Corp. is to provide one ASU student a scholarship worth the equivalent of the cost of full tuition and fees for an academic year. The annual scholarship is designed for Texas resident students earning degrees in computer science and management information systems at the university.

“This is going to help quiet a bit,” Spencer said. “I was going to have to take out loans next year.”

Spencer, currently a Texas resident, has lived around the country as the son of a Coast Guard member. He served in the Air Force for three years before settling in San Angelo to complete his degree.

ASU President James Hindman said, “This is a very generous gift from an organization that has a longstanding partnership with ASU. Northrop Grumman resides on the ASU campus, trains and hires our graduates and operates the university’s data center along with other data centers.

“The creation of this scholarship,” said Hindman, “demonstrates that they understand the needs of the community in which they work.”

“Northrop Grumman is proud to support tomorrow’s IT professionals by honoring their educational achievements with this scholarship,” said Hugh Taylor, president, Commercial, State and Local Group, of Northrop Grumman’s Information Technology sector. “We congratulate Jacob and look forward to continued partnership with ASU and its students.”
