Verizon Grant Funds $15,000 in ASU Scholarships

Verizon Foundation has given a $15,000 grant to Angelo State University for eligible students enrolled in the College of Business.

The scholarships will be awarded to five individuals with awards varying from $2,000 to $6,000, depending upon the grade point average of the students.

ASU President Dr. James Hindman and Business Dean Dr. Michael Butler accepted the check from corporate representatives Barbara Walker, Verizon director-external affairs, and David Russell, Verizon vice president-external affairs.

Verizon Southwest Region President Steve Banta said, “ Angelo State University plays an integral role in the economic development of the Concho Valley. It serves as the primary source of professional employees for employers throughout the area. This grant underscores our longstanding goal of supporting higher education and the communities we serve.”

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, last year awarded grants totaling more than $74 million to charitable and nonprofit agencies with a focus on improving literacy, computer and technology skills, and supporting domestic violence solutions. The foundation uses its technology network and the power of Verizon employees in the United States and abroad to develop partnerships that assist organizations serving the needs of diverse communities such as victims of domestic violence, people with disabilities, and the economically and socially disadvantaged.

The foundation’s efforts include supporting the charitable activities of Verizon employees through one of the nation’s largest employee-incentive programs, Verizon Volunteers. Employees have volunteered more than 1.6 million hours in their communities since 2003, and the Verizon Volunteers program contributed $35.6 million in combined employee and Verizon contributions to charitable and nonprofit organizations in 2005 alone.
