Guest Trombonist to Join ASU Pianist for Recital

Accomplished trombonist Dr. Mark Springer will accompany Angelo State University music professor Dr. Shannon Loehrke’s piano-playing when the two perform in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 6, in the Recital Hall of the Carr Education-Fine Arts Building.

The recital is free to the public.

Loehrke and Springer have been performing together since 2002. Loehrke has frequently joined Springer in performances at Minnesota’s St. Cloud State University, where Springer teaches trombone and low brass. This is Springer’s first appearance at ASU.

Springer and Loehrke’s recital will open with Grigori Kalinkowitsch’s “Elegia: Memories of Dmitri Schostakovitch.” Other works will include Jacques Casterede’s “Sonatine pour Trombone et Piano,” Brad Edwards’ “Blue Wolf for Unaccompanied Trombone” and Paul Hindemith’s “Sonate for Trombone and Piano.”

Springer has performed throughout the Midwest and Canada with numerous orchestras, bands and jazz ensembles, including the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Wobegon Brass Band and the Madison (Wisc.) Symphony Orchestra.

He also has performed or recorded with the American Brass Quintet, Wisconsin Brass Quintet and Dallas Brass. He has appeared on the American Brass Quintet release “Fyre and Lightning” and the Lake Wobegon Brass Band releases “Jubilee!” “Live From the United Kingdom” and “Bravura.”

Springer holds bachelor’s degrees from Washington State University and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is chair of the St. Cloud State Department of Music and has been on the music faculty there since 1996.
