ASU Police Department Establishes Crime Prevention Unit

To help keep the Angelo State University campus one of the safest in the state, University Police Chief James E. Adams has announced the creation of a three-member Crime Prevention Unit.

Adams said the unit will provide each police shift with a designated officer responsible for the department's crime deterrence efforts. The unit will also promote the important partnership between law enforcement and the campus community to help reduce crime and enhance the quality of campus life.

Members of the unit are Cpl. Marc West, Sgt. Brian Hatch and Officer Mary Morales.

Hatch and Morales recently completed specialized training in crime prevention techniques and methods at the Institute for Criminal Justice Studies in San Marcos. They also received certification as crime prevention specialists from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

The officers will coordinate the university's Campus Watch Program, overseeing training related to Operation Identification, alcohol awareness, personal self defense, workplace violence, sexual assault awareness and on-site security threat assessment surveys.

For more information or for special crime prevention services, contact Cpl. Marc West at the University Police Department, 942-2071.
