Announcing Clinics on Demand

Are you interested in developing your technical skills or learning more about adventurous activities? Then Outdoor Adventures’ Educational Clinics are for you!

University Recreation offers a variety of free, educational clinics and safety workshops to Faculty/Staff with a UREC Pass and OA Program Privileges, and currently enrolled students. The clinics are FREE!

All you need to do is get you, and at least two other friends to sign up with you for the clinic. Schedule the clinic with our trained instructors to fit your time table. Once we receive the registration form, our instructor will contact you to confirm. Please, allow two weeks lead time when scheduling clinics.

Here is a sample of the clinics we offer. However, our talented instructors can work with your group if there is a specific adventure activity you are interested in learning more about.

  • Introduction to Climbing Movement (1.5 hours)

Whether you can do fifty pull-ups or none, this clinic will enhance your rock climbing technique beyond belief. In two short hours, you will learn climbing terminology, proper bouldering and spotting techniques, and how to incorporate balance and core strength into your climbing.

  • Top Rope Belay (2 hours)

The Top Rope Belay Clinic is the perfect workshop to expand your rock climbing skills.  This clinic helps you avoid the waiting list and teaches you how to effectively belay your climbing partner. What is belaying? Belaying is a technique that protects a climber through the use of rope, harnesses, anchors, carabiners and mechanical friction. The climber’s partner, the belayer, uses this technique to catch, hold, and lower the climber should they fall. Climbing equipment is included for clinic participants, but spots are limited.

  • Backpacking 101 (1 hour)

Are you ready to put more on your back than just your textbooks and laptops? Then come join this workshop where we will cover the essential items to carry, and how to make it all fit. Instructors in this clinic will help you make the difference in your trip from having an ok time, to a memorable experience.

Are you ready to cool down and get in the water? Come check out our kayaking clinic on Lake Nasworthy and learn the ins and outs of paddling. Whether you are just looking to cruise around, or you are dying to practice your roll, this clinic is for you! Kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are available to clinic participants, but there are a limited number of spots.

  • Camp Cooking 101 (1.5 hours)

Come to Camp Cooking 101 where you’ll learn how to cook without a fire extinguisher nearby. This clinic covers everything from lighting a camping stove to some basic meals that are pretty tasty after a long-day’s hike.  All you need to bring to this activity is an appetite.

  • Mountain Biking 101 (1 hour)

Be prepared for an intense Mountain Biking experience by coming to Mountain Biking 101. Learn essentials such as how to repair a flat, how to replace a bike chain, safety tips, proper bike usage and much more. No mountain will be too high once these basics are learned.
