English and Modern Languages Department
The Department of English and Modern Languages at Angelo State University aspires to celebrate the aesthetic and values of language.
Our English program gives you the opportunity to explore a number of sub-disciplines, including:
- English education
- Literary studies
- Technical writing
- Creative writing
On the modern languages side, we offer the following language specializations:
- Spanish
- French
- German
- Russian
Linguistics is offered in both courses of study. You also have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary programs, such as film studies and gender studies.
Committed Faculty
Our faculty members practice what they teach. Our hope is to inspire you by demonstrating the central role language plays in creating culture, understanding, community and learning.
English professors write for publication, edit professional journals and present their scholarship at conferences. Several faculty members also edit the Concho River Review, a semi-annual literary journal published by ASU.
Our modern languages faculty members will guide you through understanding the issues involved in approaching another culture through the language of that culture. Faculty also make themselves available outside of class for various activities to provide you with informal settings for developing foreign language proficiency.
First-Hand Experience
The English program’s annual literary and artistic magazine, Oasis, offers students experience editing and designing. You are also encouraged to join any of the department’s student organizations that embrace different aspects of writing and foreign languages and cultures.
Department Values
We acknowledge all habits, relationships, assumptions and intentions are founded in an underlying system of values. Through our programs, courses, assignments, scholarship, creative work, service and other activities, we foreground for our students, members and the community the values of respect, compassion, logic, open-mindedness, honesty, perseverance, presence, equity, diversity, transparency and innovation.
