Animal Science Master’s Degree (M.S.)

Students in our Master of Science (M.S.) in animal science program can choose from a variety of focus areas, including:

Program Highlights

  • Research is a large component of the master’s degree program. Students who have received graduate assistantships have chosen research topics that vary from meat science and grazing management to wool and mohair technology and pathobiology.

Admission Formula

[GPA x 100] + Quantitative + Verbal + Converted Analytical ≥ 740.

GRE Analytical Writing Conversion Scale

The GRE Analytical Writing sub test is scored on a scale of 1-6. This score is converted to the metric of the other sub tests as follows:

1.0-2.0 = 130           
2.5 = 135
3.0 = 140
3.5 = 145
4.0 = 150
4.5 = 155
5.0 = 160
5.5 = 165
6.0 = 170

Admission Requirements

  • All college and university transcripts (Email unofficial transcripts for application evaluation purposes to the College of Graduate Studies and Research at With the exception of Angelo State University transcripts) 
  • M.S. Essay Topic: (Attach to Apply Texas application or email to
    • Which ASU agriculture professor has agreed to work with you on a research thesis?
    • Which area of agriculture research interests you most and why? Also, what are your background and career goals related to agriculture?
  • GRE scores (If an applicant has at least a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA or 3.0 last 60 hours GPA, then the GRE requirement is waived)
  • Two Academic Letters of Reference from former Collegiate Instructors (to be sent directly to Department of Agriculture)
  • Department thesis advisor approval (Contact Department of Agriculture for more information)
  • Current Curriculum Vitae or Resume (to be sent directly to Department of Agriculture)


  • Hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.5 or better, including all grades on repeated courses – or hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work
  • Completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours of undergraduate course work in animal science, agriculture, range management, wildlife management or agronomy, including 12 credit hours of advanced course work

Degree Plan

  • For thesis students, 30 hours of coursework and six hours of thesis work are required.

    The specific courses required for animal science majors will be determined by your advisory committee. A thesis project must be approved by the advisory committee and the graduate dean.

    All graduate students are expected to successfully pass a comprehensive oral exam and successfully defend their thesis at the end of their graduate work.

Students are considered for the Carr Academic Graduate Scholarship upon their acceptance into the College of Graduate Studies and Research. No application is required.
